RACINE – Free broadband wireless internet access is now available in the Adult Services Department. This is being provided at no cost to the taxpayers by CyberLynk Business Internet Solutions, a local Internet Service Provider, and may be a first for Wisconsin. Other public libraries have had to purchase wireless service to provide free Wi-Fi for their customers
CyberLynk, a leader in the internet service industry since 1995, maintains a wired and wireless network to provide high-speed, commercial grade Internet service to businesses in southeast Wisconsin and northeast Illinois. CyberLynk also offers information technology/network consulting and marketing consulting services to small businesses. For more information about CyberLynk, visit their web site at: http://www.CyberLynk.net People wishing to use this unfiltered internet hot spot will need to provide their own wireless-capable devices, such as wireless-capable laptops or handheld computers, that are battery-operated and that are configured to conform to standard 802.11b.
Most new laptops that come configured for wireless access can automatically pick up the wireless signal. Individuals may need to know how to use their wireless device’s configuration software to connect to the wireless network. Due to liability issues, library staff is not allowed to configure patrons’ laptops or handheld computers or install any devices or software on those computers. Technical support is only available from the wireless service vendor, CyberLynk.
Users should be aware that wireless networks are not secure and use is at the individual’s own risk. Virus, security and privacy protection are the responsibility of the patron and are not provided by the library. The library is not responsible for any damage to data files, alteration to file systems, or functionality of the computer resulting from connecting to the wireless network.
This service is intended to be available during the normal operating hours of the library. However, the library cannot guarantee that wireless service will be available at any specific time, nor can the library guarantee internet speed or quality of the connection. Printing is not available over this wireless network via the library’s printers.
For directions to the area of the Adult Services Department that provides the strongest signal for this wireless network, inquire at the reference desk (262) 636-9217.
